Out of Sight Doesn't Exist, Right? by Kerstin Cook
Acrylic, Found Object 30"x36"x8" 3D found object artwork of trash spilling out of an acrylic painting of house plants. Made from 50% PCR, including the acrylic paint.
CAUSE: Climate Change, The Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org)
ARTIST STATEMENT: We live on a planet where we are all participating in its destruction. Some may choose to ignore that fact, but the more we collectively try to bury our heads in the sand, the more we’ll find our mouths full of microplastics. Nature is crying for help and it demands our attention. In creating this artwork, I imagined the dichotomy of a clean, aesthetic painting meant to beautify a space, being torn apart by the garbage and single-use plastics that we quickly discard but cannot destroy. All of the materials in this piece are composed from my personal trash, or were collected along the roadway within a 30-minute walk from my apartment. Sadly, I was easily able to collect more than enough plastic for this composition. But I worry that even with an artwork that is as in your face as this, people will still put this issue out of mind.
