Considering all creatures friends, I particularly gravitate toward snakes because they are so often immediately met with brutality from humans. In reality, they are far more terrified of us than we are of them, and more often than not, they’re simply trying to get away from us. I see them as gentle friends passing through our gardens and invaluable parts of a healthy ecosystem. I was drawn to the way porcelain clay dries with an almost skeletal quality, reminiscent of the delicate bones of a snake. That inspired me to sculpt this one and give it a lush moss garden of its own—a soft, safe place to rest.
